So as many of you already know (if you are following us on Social Media) we've trialled the food prepared and delivered by Butternut Box (sounds like a fashionable Californian trend diet) for a few weeks and we loved it. So we though who else would be best to ask but you guys.
Before asking some of my clients to trial it, we wanted our dog Bernard to check it out for himself. We loved the service, we loved the box, and most importantly Bernard loved the food, but more of this later. Learn more about our experience by checking our Vlog on our YouTube Channel.
We also loved the two young entrepreneurs behind the product, David & Kevin. They are smart and fun, and so passionate about dogs and dog food.
Butternut Box was inspired by the health issues of their rescue dog, Rudie. She was itchy, nervous and smelly (not my favourite combo frankly). Nothing seemed to make a difference. Their vet suggested her diet could be to blame and after switching her to home cooked food they were astounded by the change in her condition.
They told us they were amazed at how quickly Rudie’s skin, ears and behaviour improved. She became calmer, was no longer flatulent (good job!), and another bonus to all of this was Rudie's newfound lease of life and love of food, having previously been a notoriously fussy eater.
So, what did we notice? Starting with our dog Bernard; he is a little bit more calm generally, and seams way more chilled out throughout the day since having Butternut Box. However this was never really an issue with him. He is much happier around meal times, and is very excited to get his breakfast or dinner. His poos are better too, and there is definitely less of it.
What my clients have said so far? All the dogs love it, and I quote: "if the dog was in charge of the shopping she would definitely go for the Butternut Box diet". Out of the 11 clients who have trialled Butternut Box 7 swapped from their old diet. The changes vary from dog to dog. Clients have noticed an improvement in coats, but as well in general behaviour and stress levels, noticing fewer of "these mad moments" after meals many of you sometimes describe. Some fussy eaters became very excited about their meals, and a couple of boisterous teenagers became calmer after a week (interestingly, this young dog was on raw food before). Pretty amazing really.
I feel I need to stay objective here and look at why some clients did not sign up after their first week. One is travelling a lot, and home delivery in London was not practical. Another was still keen to stay on a raw food diet. And the rest enjoy Butternut Box but thought it was not for them for the time being.
A few owners also liked the fact that you get a variety of meats and flavours weekly within the box, making meal time more exciting for the dog. As the food is made with human grade ingredients you can try it yourself (I did) and apart form the fact that it's seasoned for dogs (way less salt, no sugar, etc.) it is delicious. The beef was my favourite, maybe Bernard will let me have his left overs on day.
As I said before, we all want to give the best to our dogs, and when it comes to their food we have so much to chose from, it becomes difficult to see clearly and to make the right choices. However, this time the guys at Butternut Box have created dog food that seams to work for everyone. It's a no-nonsense product, with simple ingredients we all recognise. It's healthy with a variety of flavours. It's reasonably priced, and dogs love it, especially Bernard.
Each Butternut Box comes with three flavours for the week:

Minced Beef (70 %), Lentils, Carrots, Peas, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Rosemary, Flaxseed, Calcium carbonate, Dicalcium phosphate, Magnesium oxide and Minerals.
